This was the case for both variations of Link’s Awakening released back in the day, about the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and it’s something the new Nintendo Switch version of this game incorporates too.

But if you’ve beaten the whole of Link’s Awakening without perishing, you’ll then get a heartwarming Easter egg comprising Marin, Link’s beat and closest in-game ally.
During your experience, Marin tells you she wants nothing more than to leave Koholint herself, and will wish to the Windfish to make it occur.
“If I had been a seagull, I would fly up to as I could! I’d fly to far away locations and sing for a lot of folks! … If I want to the Wind Fish, then I still wonder if my dream will come true”

And it is this you will get to see if you’ve got that no-death save – the consequence being that Marin got her wish and has been saved, despite Koholint Island being not any longer.
From the first Game Boy Link’s Awakening, Marin’s sprite was literally given wings – such as a floating item in one of the game’s dungeons.
From the Game Boy Color variation, Link’s Awakening DX, a vision of Marin herself is briefly seen, before a seagull is revealed flying away. The implication here is not as that Marin has sprouted wings, along with more that her desire has literally come true.
In the end, in the Nintendo Switch variant, which can be an immediate remaster of the DX ending. Again, we see a fantasy of Marin, until the seagull flies away. Is Link just recalling her if he sees the seagull? Or has been reincarnated as a spirit? The game enables you to pick.
It is one of many ways Link’s Awakening on Switch stays authentic to the original game – that in turn proved to be a large reason I discovered so much to appreciate about this remake. “Koholint warrants nothing less, while Connect must journey to leave its shores, this model will always be a place which preserves the island to get other people to follow,” I wrote at Eurogamer’s Link’s Awakening Shift inspection.
